Oscars Month, Home Streaming, and Box Office Blues

Oscars Month, Home Streaming, and Box Office Blues

Do you ever feel stuck in a movie rut, anxiously waiting for summer blockbusters while theaters feel empty? We get it. On this week's episode of So Many Sequels, we embraced the seasonal lull to catch up on some streaming gems, revisit Oscar classics, and brainstorm some fun movie themes for future episodes.

Oscars Month Is in Full Swing

We're deep into our special "Oscars Best _____ Month," taking a fresh look at standout Academy Award nominees from the past. Last time, we revisited Martin Scorsese's legendary gangster flick, Goodfellas. Next up, we'll dive into the classic newsroom drama, Network. Garrett hasn't revealed his pick yet, but he promises it's worth the wait.

What We're Watching on Streaming

Here's what we've been streaming lately and our thoughts:

  • Heretic (Max): Hugh Grant blew us away with his eerie and unsettling performance as a mysterious character confronting two young Mormon missionaries. It's definitely captivating.

  • American Primeval (Netflix): Garrett was impressed by this intense, gritty limited series starring Taylor Kitsch and Betty Gilpin. It dives deep into the brutal realities of Mormon migration and westward expansion—definitely not for the faint-hearted, but highly recommended.

  • Daredevil (Disney+): We're a little conflicted on this one. It's great seeing Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio back, but the action feels toned down compared to the Netflix original, relying heavily on CGI. Still, we're hopeful it'll pick up as it moves forward.

  • Everybody's Live with John Mulaney (Netflix): Josh checked out Netflix's take on the "experimental" live talk show with celebrity panels, bizarre advice segments, and a refreshing, if somewhat surreal, take on late night TV. The episode featured Michael Keaton, Joan Baez, and Fred Armisen talking sharing stories about financial mistakes.

The Box Office Blues

We also talked about the disappointing box office numbers lately. New movies like Novocaine, Mickey 17, and Black Bag aren't exactly drawing big crowds, while franchise films like Captain America: Brave New World continue to dominate.

Nikki Glaser Returning to Host the Golden Globes in 2026

We're excited to hear that comedian Nikki Glaser will be back to host the Golden Globes after her successful solo debut! Imagine Nikki hosting the Globes and Conan O'Brien tackling the Oscars...forever. Boys can dream.

Thinking Ahead: Disaster Movie Month?

With Oklahoma weather throwing blizzards, tornadoes, and dust storms at us recently, we joked about hosting a "Disaster Movie Month." Movies like The Day After Tomorrow and Armageddon topped our list. Let us know what your favorites are!
